Order intake in the mechanical and plant engineering sector in North Rhine-Westphalia in July 2023 fell short of the previous year’s result by 13 percent in real terms. There were 4 percent fewer orders from Germany and 17 percent fewer from abroad. The euro zone contributed to this foreign result with a minus of 7 percent and the non-euro zone with a minus of 20 percent.
In the less volatile three-month period from May to July 2023, incoming orders increased by 6 percent year-on-year. Domestic orders increased by 38 percent and orders from abroad decreased by 11 percent. Demand from the European region fell short of the previous year’s figures by 7 percent and from non-European countries by 12 percent.
As feared, the negative trend of recent months is continuing. Orders from abroad in particular fell significantly. The positive figure for the three-month period is strongly influenced by major orders in recent months. In view of the domestic political discussions and geopolitical challenges, no significant improvements are expected for the time being.
