Mechanical engineering NRW: defying the odds

In August 2022, new orders in the mechanical and plant engineering sector in North Rhine-Westphalia were 3 percent higher than in the same month a year earlier. Domestic demand fell by 11 percent, while orders from abroad increased by 10 percent. The euro zone contributed minus 1 percent and the non-euro zone plus 15 percent to this result.

In the three-month period from June to August 2022, incoming orders fell by 11 percent year-on-year. Orders from the domestic market decreased by 18 percent and those from abroad by 8 percent. Orders from both European and non-European countries were down 8 percent year-on-year.

In August, the mechanical and plant engineering sector in North Rhine-Westphalia defied the adversities imposed on it by the business environment. In view of the current problems in the supply chains, it remains to be seen when incoming orders will be reflected in sales. The order backlog is already a good twelve months old and cannot be reduced, in particular due to the material bottlenecks.
