Mechanical and plant engineering in NRW

With nearly 190,000 employees across around 1,600 companies, the mechanical engineering sector is the region’s largest industrial employer. In 2024, its revenue amounted to approximately 48 billion euros. The federal state is home to world‑class industrial corporations as well as numerous “hidden champions” that lead in their respective business fields.

Mechanical and plant engineering is both a driving force and an enabler for many other branches of industry. It enables the transformation towards a climate-neutral, energy- and resource-efficient economy – both in terms of its own sector and industry as a whole.

Hannover Messe is the world’s leading trade fair for industry. Around 4,000 exhibiting companies from the mechanical engineering, electrical and digital industries as well as the energy sector present solutions for a competitive and sustainable industry. The main exhibition areas are Automation & Digitalization, Energy & Industrial Infrastructure and Research & Technology Transfer. The focus is on automation and digitalization. Companies from all over the world will be showcasing their innovations and solutions for the manufacturing industry. A new feature is the Defense Production Area – a forward-looking exhibition format to strengthen the European security and defense industry.
Brazil, the largest economy in Latin America, will take center stage in 2026. The country has great potential – from green energy and raw materials to a dynamically growing industrial market. Over 1,500 German companies are already active in the country and account for around ten percent of Brazil’s industrial production.
