In March 2022, incoming orders in the mechanical and plant engineering sector in North Rhine-Westphalia were 6 percent below the level of the same month a year earlier. Demand from the domestic market remained unchanged. Order intake from abroad fell by 9 percent. Orders received from the euro zone were down 21 percent year-on-year and from the non-euro zone by 3 percent.

In the three-month period January to March 2022, incoming orders increased by 7 percent year-on-year. Orders from the domestic market increased by 5 percent and those from outside the eurozone by 9 percent. Orders from other European countries decreased 8 percent, while orders from non-European countries gained 17 percent.

In March, there are initial signs that the war situation is having an impact on the willingness to invest. Although the first quarter ended on a positive note, expectations for the coming months are rather subdued.
