Cross-border cooperation leads to innovation

The border between the Netherlands and Germany is a real breeding ground for innovation: Three new high-impact projects within the European Manufacturing NextMaterials (MNM) project are now being launched. These projects all focus on scaling up components made from advanced materials and production technologies and show how cross-border cooperation leads to real innovation in the manufacturing industry. MNM helps SMEs in the border region to make the step from prototype to production. This is done through knowledge sharing and strong partnerships between entrepreneurs on both sides of the border.

Circular 3D printing of composite materials: In the Circular Printing of Advanced Tooling (CPAT) project, SpiralRTC (NL) and Nedcam GmbH (DE) are working together on large-scale 3D printing applications with recycled composite materials. This creates a circular production chain in which high-quality molds go through several life cycles. This is good for the environment and for your wallet.

Intelligent bike manufacturing without welding: The second project, Intelligent Bike Manufacturing, focuses on 3D-printed connectors that can be used to build bike frames without welding. Nijland Cycling (NL), DNL-contact GmbH (DE) and Münster University of Applied Sciences are developing a modular mounting system that facilitates local production. Less transportation, less CO₂, more flexibility.

3D printing for space travel: In “Additive Manufacturing of Sounding Rocket Antennas”, Spacecific (NL) and Aviation AM (DE) are pooling their expertise to additively manufacture antennas for sounding rockets that collect data. By combining RF engineering with advanced AM, this enables the development of high-quality, field-proven and easily customizable antenna designs. This innovative development is something very special for the border region.

These three new projects show what MNM stands for: Sustainable innovation through collaboration. Whether it’s composite materials, bicycles or rocket parts: An ecosystem is emerging in the border region in which courageous SMEs are shaping the future of the manufacturing industry together.

These projects are part of the “Manufacturing NextMaterials” initiative under the Interreg VI Germany-Netherlands program. The implementation is co-financed by the European Union, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, MWIKE NRW, MB Niedersachsen and the provinces of Drenthe, Flevoland, Fryslân, Gelderland, Groningen, North Brabant and Overijssel.
